Revitalization and maintenance of the nursery

Last week of June, we finally had the opportunity to dedicate ourselves to the maintenance of our nursery, reaffirming our commitment to the holistic care of plants. We recognize that a successful nursery goes beyond producing new plants, also encompassing the nourishment and upkeep of existing ones to ensure their optimal development. Our recent maintenance activities exemplify this philosophy, focusing on revitalizing our diverse collection and adopting sustainable practices. In this article, we will detail these activities and the scientific principles behind them, demonstrating how a thriving nursery is built on meticulous care for each plant, from germination to maturity.

The importance of nursery maintenance

Nursery maintenance is crucial for several reasons:

  • Growth optimization: Transplanting into larger containers gives plants the space and resources needed for root development and overall growth.

Recent maintenance activities

Our recent maintenance efforts focused on four main areas:

  • Transplanting into larger containers: A wide range of plants, from delicate fruit tree seedlings such as apple, peach, pomegranate, lemon, and loquat, to trees like carob, persimmon, and cherimoya, as well as various other species at different stages of development, were carefully transplanted from old pots and seed trays into larger containers. This process involved carefully removing the root ball, trimming damaged roots, and placing the plant into fresh, nutrient-rich substrate, thereby giving them the space and resources needed for healthy, vigorous growth.
  • Soil reuse: Committed to sustainability, we reused soil from pots where seeds failed to germinate and where plants did not thrive, mixing it with fresh compost and nutrients to create a rich, nourishing substrate for the transplanted plants.
  • Identification and organization: Each plant was meticulously labeled with its scientific and common name, ensuring accurate identification. We also grouped plants by type (e.g., forest trees, fruit trees, shrubs) and species, creating distinct zones within the nursery to facilitate handling and management.
  • Rescue and rejuvenation: Forgotten cuttings of various species (fig, willow, elder, and olive) were assessed for viability, and those showing signs of life were carefully transplanted to encourage new growth, demonstrating our commitment to minimizing waste and maximizing the potential of every plant.
