Newsletter September 2021

September marks our first Newsletter. This month we organized 6 workshops, 3 training sessions and 1 walk. In total we had 73 participants in our activities. It was 4 very intense weeks for our association!

Below is a recap of some of the activities we organized.

WORKSHOPS AND TRAININGS

SYNTROPIC REFORESTATION

On the 20th we had a workshop on reforestation with native species, facilitated by Guilherme Weishar. A group of 8 young people planted 60 trees (mainly strawberry trees and cork oaks) and scattered hundreds of greenmulch seeds to boost the trees. The trees were planted in the water retention structures built last week (swales and half-moons). Rain is coming at the end of this week, so we gave them a bit of water to hold on until then. This is a prototype of a very promising regeneration plan, and we’re excited to watch the results over the years.

WATER RETENTION STRUCTURES

On the 17th we organized a workshop on retention structures facilitated by Guilherme Weishar. A group of young people learned how to build half-moons using materials available on site (branches, logs, stones, leaves, etc). These structures help mitigate the erosive force of water and aid its infiltration. Soil carried by the water is retained by the structure, creating a fertile basin.

SYNTROPIC GARDEN

Also on the 17th, Marcela Sobral facilitated a session on garden design following the Syntropic Agriculture model. We explored the different strata that can be created in a vegetable bed (e.g. peppers and broccoli in the tall stratum, lettuce and parsley in the lower stratum) and the different synergies that result from this. Biodiversity is the key to abundance!

BIOCOSMETICS

On the 25th and 26th we had two biocosmetics workshops with Andreia Anandeshvarii from Atma Botanica. We learned how to make our own deodorant, toothpaste, moisturizer and multi-purpose soap for the home. All with natural, environmentally friendly products!

HIKES

On the 19th we organized a walk through the hills of Paul. Our guides, Alexandre Silva and Jantra Zijlstra, took us on a several-hour journey. We passed by a farm, walked through a river, and ended at a river beach with a small waterfall.
